Foreign languages are first introduced during the third year in our Primary classrooms, and extend into spoken and written work during the elementary years as a variety of languages are integrated with classroom materials and cultural lessons on a daily basis. Language lessons are given Montessori-style individually and in small groups. The students have lessons in spoken and written Mandarin as they learn about the development of communication methods in ancient civilizations around the world. As a Latin-based language, learning Italian paves the way for in-depth studies of classical Latin, historical studies of Ancient and Middle Civilizations as well as the Renaissance period, and the language of music. Latin is introduced to the upper elementary students in the context of historical studies. As they add vocabulary and grammar lessons to their repertoire, the students are excited to translate a mysterious Latin scroll which tells the story of family living in the ancient city of Alexandria, at one time the cultural center of the world.

Each year, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students participate in a Montessori Model United Nations program. Throughout the school year the students study the UN's role and responsibilities, current world issues, and the rules of procedure for caucus and debate, while also researching the history, politics, economic and social status of an assigned country for which they will become student ambassadors. In the spring, after much preparation, the student delegates travel with their teacher to the United Nations Headquarters in New York City to attend a three day Model UN simulation with hundreds of other Montessori students from around the world. Together they learn to write draft resolutions, prepare speeches and achieve consensus on global issues in a peaceful manner. In 2007, Academy of the Child became the first Montessori school in Maryland to participate in this international program. The students raise some funds each year to reduce the cost of their trip and some of the preparatory work is done after school.
Our students produce an elaborate community theater style production every year. The Elementary Class raises funds to pay for materials needed for scenery, costumes, sound and lighting, and sells tickets to cover the cost of renting a theater. The five year olds from the Primary Class join the elementary students playing bit roles, and singing or dancing in the productions.
Parents are encouraged, but not required, to volunteer their help for some of these special events.
